What Is PAT Testing?

PAT Testing is the process of inspecting and electrically testing portable and movable appliances to check they are safe to use. It combines a visual inspection for damage with electrical tests such as earth continuity, insulation resistance and polarity, depending on the appliance class.

Portable Appliance Testing is a key part of any business's electrical safety programme, and the recognised way of demonstrating compliance with the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989.

Typical items we test:

  • Computers & monitors
  • Chargers & power supplies
  • Kettles & microwaves
  • Extension leads
  • Kitchen equipment
  • Tills & card terminals
  • Power tools
  • Portable heaters

Why Does Your Business Need PAT Testing?

A single damaged lead is enough to injure someone or start a fire. Testing finds it first — and proves you looked.

  • Reduces the risk of electric shock and electrical fires in the workplace
  • Demonstrates compliance with health & safety obligations
  • Required by many insurance policies and commercial leases
  • Identifies faulty appliances before they cause downtime or injury
  • Provides evidence of due diligence for health & safety inspections
  • Reassures staff, customers and visiting contractors
No single law names PAT testing, but the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 require employers to keep electrical equipment in a safe condition. A dated asset register and certificate is how that duty is evidenced.
